Honeywell: Helping Fight The Pandemic

Honeywell has been an American institution for decades. The company’s efforts to help with the needs of the covid-19 pandemic is a reflection of the work they have been doing to help protect the world and the United States in particular.

The company just announced they have added two other facilities to help manufacture much needed protective gear and hand sanitizer. They also manufacture many components used in the making of ventilators.

When General Motors started its efforts to build ventilators Honeywell was among the first to answer the call for the components GM would need. The company makes components “designed to help control pressure, airflow, temperature and humidity,” their website notes.

Late March Honeywell announced it had started to revamp their Phoenix facility and was hiring an additional 500 people to help with the manufacture of N-95 face masks. Production changes started in April and by the end of that month Honeywell had built the manufacturing equipment and were turning out thousands of masks.

They have also added other company facilities to their efforts. Plants in Muskegon, Michigan and Seelze, Germany began making hand sanitizer The facilities repurposed existing equipment to accommodate new hand sanitizer production guidelines from U.S. and German regulators, while another facility in Smithfield, Rhode Island began making N-95 masks.

The hand sanitizer manufacturing took “reconfiguring process flow to allow charging of the mixing vessels based on the revised guidelines and formulation from the regulators,” a Honeywell spokesperson said. “We had to read, interpret and implement the mixing procedures and we trained personnel in the safe handling of the ingredients.”

Honeywell spokesman Eric Krantz confirmed the company has increased production at multiple facilities globally to address growing demand.

“We are well-positioned to further help the U.S. government address COVID-19 response efforts,” Krantz told Barron’s, adding that Honeywell is “rapidly moving to add capacity in the U.S. for N95 face masks.”

Vice President Mike Pence praised Honeywell and the other companies that are aiding in the Covid-19 efforts. “Those companies have now greatly increased by the tens of millions their production of so-called N95 masks that will give our health care workers the protection that they need to administer to those who are dealing with the symptoms or the disease of coronavirus,” Pence said

Meanwhile, Honeywell has also been attuned to the needs of its own employees and created a $10 million dollar fund to assist the financial needs of some of its workers.

“We recognize that not all employees are equally prepared to cope with the financial hardships of an economic downturn,” says a company spokesman. “As a result, we have created this fund to help employees who might need additional assistance.”

Master Electronics and Online Components is proud to work with Honeywell and highly commend the company for its efforts.
